Taichung

Taichung is one of Taiwan's most underrated destinations, often overshadowed by Taipei—but trust me, it absolutely deserves a spot on your Taiwan itinerary! If you're looking for a city with a laid-back charm, artistic vibes, and incredible food, Taichung is the place to be.

Most visitors should plan for two or three days in Taichung to see its main attractions, but a longer trip of three to five days is recommended for exploring nearby natural areas like Sun Moon Lake or the mountains. Some visitors even see Taichung as a day trip from Taipei, though spending a night is less rushed and allows for a better experience of the city and its night markets. A two-day trip is enough for major city sights, the Rainbow Village, and an evening at a night market. Three days is ideal for a more complete experience of the city's cultural sites, markets, and a nearby destination like Gaomei Wetland. Five days allows for deeper exploration of the city and includes day trips to natural attractions like Sun Moon Lake, Gaomei Wetlands, or mountain areas. Explore Rainbow Village, the Calligraphy Greenway, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Taichung Theater.

As a U.S. passport holder, you will be allowed to enter Taiwan without a visa for up to ninety days if your passport is valid for more than 90 days. If your passport has less than 90 days of validity remaining, you will be able to enter Taiwan for a time equal to the expiration date of your passport.

Public transportation in Taichung includes a good number of bus routes that will take you from the train station to various districts. Taxis are also a convenient way to get around Taichung and are easy to find. For more flexibility, you can rent a car from several Avis locations.
