Karen, a fantastic and well informed guide showed around the public areas of the Toshogu Shrine and the Rinoji temples. She explained about the history of Nikko and the temple area, the differences and the similarities between Shinto and Buhdism. She told us how at the time the temples were built the two religions were intermixed and that it was only with the Meiji restoration that they were separated - causing the shrines and temples to be reorganised. It was the perfect introduction to a day in Nikko.
Toshogu Shrine and Edo Village are particularly expensive (at Toshogu Shrine, you have to buy amulets, there are food stalls during Golden Week, and the parking lot is crowded, so you have to park in a paid area) (at Edo Village, there are charges for experiences and some facilities are paid as well), so I was grateful to be able to buy admission tickets and passes at a slightly cheaper price. It was crowded during Golden Week, but I still enjoyed it.
I was able to spend Golden Week in 2026 in perfect weather.
