Sanriku

The name Sanriku refers to a collective of three historical provinces. The 'san' (三) in Sanriku specifically means 'three'. These provinces were part of an administrative division that became obsolete in 1871 when Japan was reorganized into its current prefecture system.

In a catastrophic tsunami that struck Sanriku on June 15, 1896, official accounts indicate that 27,122 people died. Additionally, 10,617 buildings were washed away, and 9,247 people were injured during this event.

Following a weak ground earthquake, a massive tsunami impacted the Sanriku coast. The highest wave recorded reached an impressive 38.2 meters. This tsunami resulted in significant damage, claiming 22,066 lives and destroying 8,891 houses.

The Sanriku Coast, known locally as Sanriku Kaigan, is a scenic coastal region situated on the Pacific Ocean. It stretches from the southern part of Aomori Prefecture, through Iwate Prefecture, and into the northern reaches of Miyagi Prefecture, all located in the northeastern part of Honshu, Japan's main island.
