Kume Island

Kume Island is accessible by airplane or ferry. You will want to take at least a full day to explore this small, stunning island. Six to eight flights a day run from Naha Airport to Kume Island. They only take about 35 minutes.

Historically due to Kume's abundance of freshwater, rice was once extensively cultivated. In 1506, the Ryukyu Kingdom invaded Kume under the leadership of Shō Shin. During Ryukyuan rule, Kume Island was often visited by Chinese envoys called sapposhi on their way to Shuri Castle on Okinawa Island.

Okinawan, or more precisely Central Okinawan, is a Northern Ryukyuan language spoken primarily in the southern half of the island of Okinawa, as well as in the surrounding islands of Kerama, Kumejima, Tonaki, Aguni and a number of smaller peripheral islands.

Kume Island and the other northern islands of Okinawa Prefecture have a Humid Subtropical climate. This climate contributes to noticeable differences in both air temperatures and water temperatures during certain months compared to other regions.
