There are two main theories for the origin of the name Wujie. One theory suggests that during Han Chinese settlement, the land was divided into areas based on the progress of cultivation: First Cluster, Second Cluster, Third Cluster, Fourth Cluster, and Fifth Cluster. Wujie was the fifth area to be developed, hence its name. Another theory states that five families with the surnames Lin, Chen, Zhang, Huang, and Jian jointly settled here, and their union was called 'Wujie'.

According to statistics, as of the end of 2024, Wujie Township had approximately 17,000 households and a population of about 42,000 people. The population density of Wujie Township is about 1,070 people per square kilometer, making it one of the townships with the highest population density in Yilan County.
