Taisho Pond

Kamikochi's summer typically runs from July to mid-September. The temperatures are cooler than Tokyo, making it an excellent summer resort and an ideal season for hiking and mountaineering. It's advisable to avoid the Obon holiday in mid-August to prevent large crowds from affecting transportation.

The walk from Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge is approximately 3.8 to 4 kilometers with a gentle terrain, taking about 2.5 hours. The scenery along the way is rich and suitable for a leisurely appreciation. If you choose to start your one-way hike after disembarking at Taisho Pond, the walking time can be roughly halved.

Your time in Kamikochi depends on your itinerary. If you want a relaxed stroll to see classic spots like Kappa Bridge, 1-2 hours is sufficient. For a deeper hike to Myojin Pond, allow 3-4 hours. For a more immersive experience, a round trip from Taisho Pond to Myojin Pond and back is recommended for 5 hours or more.

Kamikochi is closed in winter (roughly mid-November to mid-April), with public transportation suspended and shops and facilities closed. While you can still enter on foot, you must be fully prepared for snow hiking. It's recommended to go with companions and seek professional advice. You might also consider visiting before it closes for winter or just after it reopens.

When visiting Taisho Pond, wear comfortable athletic shoes as some paths are gravel. Be mindful of weather changes; wooden boardwalks can be slippery when wet, so pay special attention to safety. Since Taisho Pond is located in Kamikochi, you'll need to take a bus to get there, so please check the bus schedule.
