Alishan is situated in the central mountain range of Taiwan, primarily within Chiayi County. It's renowned for its high altitude, diverse forest ecosystems, and scenic beauty, forming part of the larger Alishan National Scenic Area, which spans across several townships.
Alishan offers unique experiences like riding the historic Alishan Forest Railway, exploring ancient sacred tree trails, and visiting scenic spots such as the Sister Ponds, Shouzhen Temple, and Elephant Trunk Wood. It's also famous for its breathtaking sunrises, sea of clouds, and lush tea plantations, attracting nature lovers and photographers.
Fenqihu Old Street is a charming historical hub often referred to as the 'mini Jiufen' of Alishan. Visitors can enjoy traditional Taiwanese snacks, try the famous railway bento boxes, explore local shops selling specialty products, and learn about its logging and railway heritage. It serves as a significant stop on the Alishan Forest Railway line.
While a comprehensive visit to Alishan National Scenic Area can span two to three days to fully experience sunrises and various trails, a well-planned one-day tour allows visitors to explore major highlights like the Forest Railway, sacred tree trails, and Fenqihu Old Street. Travel time to and from the area should be factored into planning.
To reach Alishan from Taipei, you can take a Taiwan High-Speed Rail (HSR) from Taipei Main Station to Chiayi HSR Station. From there, transfer to a public bus (e.g., Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Alishan Route B) or arrange for a private transfer directly to the Alishan National Scenic Area. The total journey can take approximately 3-4 hours.
Traveling from Chiayi to Alishan typically takes about 2 to 2.5 hours by public bus, depending on traffic and road conditions. If traveling by private car or shared transfer, the journey duration is similar, offering a direct route into the mountainous scenic area and its attractions.
Ride-sharing services like Uber are generally not available or widely used directly within the mountainous Alishan National Scenic Area due to the remote location. Visitors typically rely on local taxis, the park's internal shuttle buses, or pre-arranged private transfers for transportation once inside the area.
It is not necessary to have a personal car for exploring the Alishan National Scenic Area itself. The park provides internal shuttle buses that connect major attractions, and the Alishan Forest Railway offers transport to various viewpoints. Many key areas are also accessible via well-maintained walking trails, making it convenient for visitors without a vehicle.
