Product Info

The Shirakawa-go Illumination is a very famous winter event in Japan, attracting visitors from all over the world with its unique cultural background and dreamlike scenery.

Shirakawa-go is a mountain village in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, famous for its unique Gassho-zukuri architecture, which was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. The Gassho-zukuri roofs are named for their resemblance to hands pressed together in prayer. This design helps snow slide off, adapting to the heavy winter snowfall in the region. The illumination event is not only a manifestation of traditional culture but also a reflection of the residents' spiritual reliance and respect. In spring and autumn, local residents light lanterns to pray for happiness and peace together.

▼ Hida Takayama is a city in northern Gifu Prefecture, famous for its well-preserved Edo-period architecture and rich traditional culture. Surrounded by mountains, it boasts beautiful natural scenery and unique local culture. Hida beef is a local specialty with a delicious texture that you cannot miss. Other local delicacies include Hida beef sushi and Hida beef burgers. Please be aware that due to heavy traffic on the day of the illumination, the driver may shorten the sightseeing time in Takayama.

▼ Shirakawa-go is a quiet mountain village surrounded by mountains, rice paddies, and rivers. This area is famous for its unique Gassho-zukuri architecture, characterized by steep, thatched A-frame roofs designed to withstand heavy winter snow. In 1995, the Gassho-zukuri villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site for their unique architectural style and cultural value. Gassho-zukuri buildings are constructed entirely of wood and thatch without a single nail. The roofs are triangular, named for their resemblance to hands pressed together in prayer. This structure is not only beautiful but also practical, adapting to the climate of Shirakawa-go, especially the heavy snowfall. The Ogimachi area of Shirakawa-go is the largest Gassho-zukuri village, with over 110 buildings, some of which are over 250 years old. Visitors can find Gassho-zukuri houses converted into inns to experience traditional Japanese rural life.
