What is the Kyushu Railway History Museum?
The Kyushu Railway History Museum is a railway-themed park located in Mojiko, known as the birthplace of the Kyushu Railway. Centered around the red-brick main building, which was constructed in 1891 as the headquarters of the former Kyushu Railway Company, the museum features exhibits of Meiji-era passenger cars, a 'Grand Panorama of Kyushu Railways,' and various permanent and special exhibitions that allow visitors to trace the history of railways in Kyushu. Located in the retro-styled Mojiko area, it is a perfect spot for railway enthusiasts and families alike to spend a relaxing day while exploring the surrounding sights.
What can you do at the Kyushu Railway History Museum?
The museum is packed with highlights. In the approximately 180-meter-long vehicle exhibition area, you can see real historical trains that once operated across Kyushu up close. The Mini Railway Park, the first in Japan to feature authentic equipment like double tracks and signals, offers a driving experience that feels just like operating a real train, making it fun for both adults and children. Furthermore, the simulator, which recreates the driver's cab of an 811 series train, allows you to experience driving while viewing the scenery between Mojiko and Orio. Together with the main building that retains the atmosphere of the Meiji era, you can fully immerse yourself in the charm of Kyushu's railways.
