Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is the center of worship for Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning in Japan. It is recommended to allocate about 1 to 1.5 hours for your visit and prayers. This duration is sufficient for you to stroll through the grounds, admire attractions such as the main shrine building, the Shinji Pond, and the Taiko Bridge, and to sample Umegae Mochi or select unique souvenirs at the Omotesando shopping street.
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is currently undergoing a 'once-in-124-years Grand Renovation of the Main Shrine Building,' which is expected to continue until early 2027. During this period, worshippers can still offer prayers within the shrine grounds. A temporary main shrine building has been constructed during the renovation, and its unique design has become another highlight. The overall visit is not significantly impacted, although some viewing angles may differ.
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine primarily enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning. Therefore, many students and parents come to pray for academic success and to pass examinations. Additionally, people also pray for advancements in culture and arts, success in their careers, and safe travels. You can purchase omamori (charms) while visiting to bring good luck to yourself or your loved ones.
You have ample time to explore the 'Seven Hells' of Beppu according to your personal preferences. Generally, to fully visit the main hot springs, it is recommended to allocate about 2 to 3 hours. Among them, the Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell), Chi no Ike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell), and Tatsumaki Jigoku (Tornado Hell) are designated as Japan's National Places of Scenic Beauty and are worth savoring to experience their unique natural landscapes and hot spring characteristics.
The name 'Jigoku' (Hell) for the Beppu hot spring area originates from its unique natural landscape. The hot spring vents, due to high-temperature steam, boiling mud, and diverse minerals, display vivid colors such as red and blue. Ancient people perceived this scene as mysterious and inaccessible, much like hell, hence the name.
Each of the 'Seven Hells' in Beppu offers unique charms. For instance, 'Umi Jigoku' (Sea Hell) is a beautiful cobalt blue, resembling the ocean; 'Chi no Ike Jigoku' (Blood Pond Hell) is red due to its high iron content; and 'Oniishibozu Jigoku' (Oniishi Monk Hell) showcases boiling mud. You can admire the natural wonders, sample food cooked using hot spring steam, and experience hot spring foot baths, immersing yourself in Beppu's rich hot spring culture.
The area around Lake Kinrin in Yufuin is full of unique charm. It is recommended to allocate about 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit. This time is sufficient for you to stroll along the lakeside, enjoy the scenery, and explore various specialty shops, art galleries, and cafes along Yunotsubo Street, experiencing Yufuin's relaxed artistic atmosphere and tasting local delicacies.
Lake Kinrin's most distinctive feature is that both hot springs and clear water emerge from the lakebed simultaneously. This causes the lake surface to easily generate mist, even in the early morning or during winter, creating a dreamlike and enchanting scenery. In autumn, the maple leaves around the lake turn red, and their reflection on the lake surface is exceptionally beautiful. Early morning is the best time to admire the thin mist on the lake, while autumn is the prime season for viewing the red foliage.
