TouShe Living Mud Volcano is a rare mud volcano basin in Taiwan, rich in underground water, making the ground soft and elastic. Visitors feel the ground shake and vibrate like a waterbed when they step on it, which is very special. This unique "dancing soil" phenomenon is a fantastic opportunity to experience the mysteries of nature and feel the earth's rhythm and fun.
The most convenient way to get to Puli from Taichung City is by taking Nantou Bus or Taiwan Tourist Shuttle. You can catch a direct bus to Puli from Taichung C-Gan Station, Taichung HSR Station, or Taichung Railway Station. The journey takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. If you prefer to drive, you can take National Freeway No. 3 and then transfer to National Freeway No. 6, which is easily accessible with clear signage.
Puli is located between the Central Mountain Range and the Snow Mountain Range, surrounded by mountains that form a natural basin. This geographical setting creates its unique mountain town scenery. The basin has a pleasant climate and abundant water resources, making Puli an ideal place for agriculture and tourism development. The surrounding mountains also offer expansive views and beautiful scenery, full of natural charm.
Puli offers a rich and diverse selection of local delicacies. We recommend trying "Puli Rice Noodles," which have a chewy texture and pair wonderfully with various toppings. Additionally, "Shaoxing Wine Sausages," made with local Shaoxing wine, have a unique aroma worth savoring. Don't miss the fresh "passion fruit" and its related products, such as passion fruit jam and passion fruit smoothies, which are refreshingly tart and sweet.
The 270-degree viewing platform around Sun Moon Lake is designed with the Shao tribe's "chui" (pestle) motif, creating a visual effect of plunging into the lake. From the platform, visitors can overlook the picturesque lake and mountains with a panoramic view. You can experience the thrill of walking among the treetops and above the lake, taking in the tranquility and grandeur of Sun Moon Lake. It's an excellent spot for memorable photos.
Nantou offers different charms throughout the seasons, but for outdoor activities and enjoying the scenery, spring and autumn (approximately March to May and September to November) are the most suitable. During these times, the weather is cool and pleasant with less rainfall, making it ideal for activities like exploring the living mud volcano, visiting tea factories, or leisurely walks by the lake. Clear weather also enhances the appreciation of the stunning landscapes.
Visiting HOHOCHA Tourist Tea Factory allows you to gain a deep understanding of the history and current status of Sun Moon Lake's Fish Pond Township as the "Hometown of Black Tea." The factory showcases a professional and transparent tea-making process, from tea plant varieties, harvesting, withering, rolling, to baking, guiding you step-by-step through the craftsmanship. You'll also have the opportunity to taste fresh local black tea and experience the beauty of tea art.
For planning a short trip to Puli, Nantou, we recommend focusing on a "slow-paced experience." In the morning, you can head to TouShe Living Mud Volcano to feel the earth's rhythm. In the afternoon, visit HOHOCHA Tourist Tea Factory for tea tasting or head to the 270-degree viewing platform around Sun Moon Lake. For dining, we suggest trying local snacks. For transportation, taking public transport from Taichung or hiring a chartered car is recommended to make your itinerary smoother and more relaxed.
