In winter, the Jigokudani Monkey Park and Togakushi Shrine are covered with snow, so please be sure to bring waterproof shoes. Also, please note that it takes about 30 minutes to walk from the entrance to the attraction one way.
The optimal season to see snow monkeys bathing is typically from late December to early March, when Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is covered in snow. During these colder months, the monkeys spend more time in the hot springs to keep warm, offering visitors a higher chance to observe their unique behavior up close. While they are present year-round, winter provides the most iconic viewing experience.
Visitors generally spend about 1.5 to 2 hours at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. This duration includes the walk to and from the monkey park (approximately 30-40 minutes each way from the trailhead) and ample time to observe the monkeys in their natural hot spring environment. This allows for enjoying the scenery and taking photos without rushing.
The trail to Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is generally considered easy to moderate. It is a roughly 1.6-kilometer (1-mile) unpaved path through a forest, which takes about 30-40 minutes one way. In winter, the path can be snowy or icy, so appropriate non-slip footwear is highly recommended. The elevation gain is minimal, making it accessible for most visitors.
At the Iiyama Snow House Village in Nagano, visitors can experience a magical snow country atmosphere. The village features various large and small characteristic snow houses, perfect for unique photo opportunities. You can walk through the illuminated snow village, and some tours may offer opportunities to enjoy local cuisine or drinks inside a snow dome, providing a truly distinctive winter cultural experience.
Nagano experiences cold winters, with temperatures often dropping below freezing, especially from December to February. It is known for significant snowfall, particularly in mountainous areas like Shiga Kogen and around the Snow Monkey Park. Heavy snow can be expected, creating picturesque winter landscapes. Visitors should dress in warm layers, including waterproof outer clothing, hats, gloves, and sturdy winter boots.
A two-day winter tour typically includes exploring the historic Zenkoji Temple, a designated national treasure, where you can worship and experience its magnificent architecture. At Togakushi Shrine, a hidden gem, you'll visit the Nakasha and Okusha sections, walking along the majestic "Giant Tree Approach" in a snowy forest. The tour also often includes an overnight stay at a hot spring hotel, allowing for relaxation in natural hot springs.
From Nagano Station, visitors typically take the Nagano Electric Railway (Nagaden) train to Yudanaka Station. From Yudanaka Station, local buses (Kanbayashi Onsen Line) connect to the Kanbayashi Onsen bus stop, which is the closest point to the park's trailhead. The total journey involves a train ride of about 45-50 minutes and a bus ride of about 10-15 minutes, followed by the forest trail walk.
For a two-day tour from Tokyo, the most efficient way to reach a Shiga Kogen hot spring hotel, such as Kidoike Onsen, is often by taking the Hokuriku Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Nagano Station. From Nagano Station, direct express buses or local buses are available to Shiga Kogen, often stopping directly at various hotels. This route offers a convenient and scenic journey into the mountainous hot spring region.
