Xiaoliuqiu (小琉球) historically derives its name from its smaller size compared to the larger Ryukyu Islands (now Okinawa), implying 'Little Ryukyu'. Early Chinese seafarers are believed to have coined this name. The island is geologically unique as Taiwan's only coral island, featuring distinctive coral reef formations and rich marine life, which sets it apart from volcanic islands.
The ferry journey to Xiaoliuqiu Island usually takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Ferries depart from Donggang Ferry Terminal in Pingtung, offering both public and private services. It is advisable to arrive at the terminal a bit earlier than your scheduled departure time, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure a smooth boarding process.
To reach Xiaoliuqiu Island from Taipei, the most common route involves taking the High-Speed Rail (HSR) from Taipei to Zuoying HSR Station in Kaohsiung. From Zuoying HSR Station, you can then take a shuttle bus, local bus, or taxi directly to Donggang Ferry Terminal. After arriving at Donggang, a short ferry ride will take you to Xiaoliuqiu Island.
Exploring Xiaoliuqiu Island thoroughly on foot would require a significant amount of time, as the island has a circumference of about 12 kilometers. While pleasant for short strolls, relying solely on walking to visit major attractions like Vase Rock, Beauty Cave, and the Liuqiu Lighthouse would likely take a full day or more and can be quite strenuous due to distances and terrain. Most visitors opt for scooters for comprehensive exploration.
The SUP stand-up paddling experience on Xiaoliuqiu Island is unique for its opportunity to encounter sea turtles in their natural habitat, making it a special way to appreciate the island's marine life. Professional coaches provide guidance and complete equipment, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Unique commemorative photos are taken during the activity, with designated periods offering stunning aerial photography, especially during the beautiful sunset hours.
The recommended way to travel from Zuoying (Kaohsiung) to Xiaoliuqiu Island is to take a direct shuttle bus or a taxi from Zuoying HSR Station to Donggang Ferry Terminal. These services are convenient and can be pre-arranged or found upon arrival. Once you reach Donggang, you will board a ferry, which is the final leg of the journey to Xiaoliuqiu Island, ensuring a streamlined transfer.
Once you arrive on Xiaoliuqiu Island, the primary methods for getting around include renting a scooter, which is the most popular choice due to its flexibility and ease of access to attractions. Electric bikes are also available for rental. For shorter distances or specific routes, walking is an option. Additionally, some accommodations may offer electric sightseeing car services, providing an alternative for exploring the island.
When considering scooter rental on Xiaoliuqiu Island, you should ensure you possess a valid international driving permit or a Taiwanese driver's license. Rental shops are readily available near the ferry terminals. It's important to inspect the scooter before rental and to always wear a helmet, which is usually provided. Most scooters use gasoline, so be aware of the locations of gas stations on the island. Some electric scooter options are also available.
