Locals habitually pronounce "Yanchao" as "Iàn-tsâu." This place name was changed during the Japanese colonial period. Its original name, "Yuan Jiao" (援剿), was the name of a屯田 unit (agricultural settlement unit) during the Ming Zheng period. It is said that "Yanchao" is a homophone of "Yuan Jiao" and also derived from the name due to the gathering of swallows.
