Yes, a day trip encompassing Jiufen Old Street, Yehliu Geopark, and Shifen is highly recommended from Taipei. This itinerary offers a diverse blend of experiences, from Jiufen's historic charm and cultural sites to Yehliu's unique geological formations like the 'Queen's Head' rock, and Shifen's scenic waterfall and sky lantern activities. It provides a comprehensive excursion into Taiwan's natural beauty and rich culture, making it a valuable experience for visitors.
While Studio Ghibli has never officially confirmed it, many visitors and fans believe Jiufen Old Street served as an inspiration for the animated film 'Spirited Away.' The striking resemblance is primarily seen in the atmospheric red lantern-lined staircases and traditional teahouses, particularly A-Mei Teahouse, which evokes the bathhouse setting from the movie. The town's mystical charm and bustling nighttime appearance contribute to this popular association, drawing many film enthusiasts.
To best experience Jiufen Old Street's local culture, visitors should stroll through its narrow alleys, savor traditional street foods like taro balls and herbal cakes, and explore the various artisan shops. Visiting a traditional tea house, such as A-Mei Teahouse, offers an authentic experience with local brews and desserts while enjoying panoramic views. Engaging with local vendors and observing the historic architecture also deepens understanding of the area's rich mining heritage and unique charm.
At Golden Waterfall, visitors can capture unique photos of the vivid golden-orange cascade, a striking result of mineral deposits from old mining operations, set against the lush green landscape. In Jiufen, the iconic red lantern-lined steps of Jiufen Old Street, especially around dusk, offer stunning, atmospheric shots. Panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding mountains from various viewpoints within Jiufen provide excellent scenic photography opportunities, particularly during sunset.
In Shifen, a must-do activity is visiting Shifen Waterfall, often called Taiwan's Niagara Falls, where you can admire its majestic cascades from various viewing platforms. Another popular experience is releasing sky lanterns on the railway tracks at Shifen Old Street. Visitors can write wishes on the lanterns before sending them into the sky, creating a magical and memorable cultural activity, especially in the evening. The old street also offers local snacks and souvenirs.
The most convenient way to visit Jiufen, Yehliu, and Shifen from Taipei for a day tour is often by booking an organized tour. These tours typically provide comfortable transportation, follow a planned itinerary to cover key attractions efficiently, and may include a multilingual guide. Alternatively, public transport involves multiple transfers by bus and train, which can be time-consuming for visiting all three locations in one day. Taxis or private car hires are also available for flexibility.
A-Mei Teahouse in Jiufen Old Street offers a distinctive cultural and culinary experience. Visitors can enjoy traditional Taiwanese tea ceremonies, sampling various high-quality teas while taking in the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and ocean. The teahouse also serves local desserts, such as taro cakes and mochi, providing an authentic taste of Jiufen. Its unique, multi-story architecture, adorned with red lanterns, contributes to a rich, immersive cultural atmosphere reminiscent of historical Taiwan.
