For a comfortable climate, the best seasons to visit Mount Omuro are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). Spring offers fresh greenery and cherry blossoms, while autumn is adorned with colorful foliage. For clear views of Mount Fuji, winter (December-February) provides the highest visibility due to dry and clear weather, making it an excellent time for spotting it. Summer (June-August) boasts lush greenery and vitality, but it's important to use sun protection and be prepared for higher temperatures.
The only way to reach the crater rim of Mount Omuro is by taking a cable car; hiking is not permitted to protect the mountain. Once at the summit, you can walk along the 'bowl-shaped crater' trail, which takes about 20-30 minutes to complete. From here, you'll enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the Izu Peninsula, Sagami Bay, and on clear days, you can even see Izu Oshima and Mount Fuji in the distance. There's also a Kyudo (Japanese archery) range at the summit, offering a unique activity.
Around Mount Omuro, in addition to the cable car ride offering spectacular crater views, you can experience the 'bowl-shaped crater' loop trail at the summit for a 360-degree panoramic vista. Nearby, the Izu Shaboten Zoo offers close encounters with animals like capybaras. For coastal scenery, the nearby Jogasaki Coast and Kadowaki Suspension Bridge are must-visit spots, allowing you to stroll and admire the vast Pacific Ocean.
The best weather conditions for viewing Mount Fuji from Mount Omuro are clear days with high air transparency. Typically, in winter (December to February), the sky is especially clear due to dry, cold air brought by the northeast monsoon, making winter the season with the highest probability of seeing Mount Fuji. It's recommended to visit in the morning when the light is soft and visibility is relatively high, making it easier to capture a clear and spectacular view of Mount Fuji.
Izu Shaboten Zoo is known for its unique animal interaction experiences. The most popular is the close encounter with capybaras, where you can participate in feeding them and even have opportunities to bathe with them or take photos. The zoo also houses various monkeys, birds, and other animals, with some areas allowing small animal feeding. Additionally, the zoo's extensive collection of cacti and succulents is a major highlight.
The Kadowaki Suspension Bridge at Jogasaki Coast is a suspension bridge spanning a sea-carved landscape. It is 48 meters long and 23 meters high, connecting two rugged cliffs. Its main feature allows visitors to experience the powerful Pacific waves crashing below and admire the spectacular columnar jointing sea erosion landscapes on either side from mid-air. Walking across the bridge offers an immersive experience of the dramatic coastal scenery, combining thrilling heights with breathtaking natural beauty.
There are several transportation options from Tokyo to the Izu region. You can take the JR Tokaido Shinkansen to Atami Station and then transfer to the Izu Kyuko Line to reach major tourist spots like Izukogen. Alternatively, you can take the JR Limited Express 'Odoriko' train directly from Tokyo or Shinjuku Station to various stations in Izu, saving you the hassle of transfers. For a more convenient trip, consider joining a day tour that offers hotel pick-up and drop-off from central Tokyo, eliminating the need to plan complex travel routes yourself.
While riding the Izu scenic train, you can enjoy diverse coastal landscapes. The train travels along the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula, offering views of the vast Pacific Ocean, where deep blue waters and peculiar rock formations create picturesque scenes. Along the route, you'll pass many fishing villages and beautiful bays, providing a panorama of the sea and sky. Especially when the train runs close to the sea, you can experience a unique sense of being close to the ocean.
