Product Info

  • This plan is hosted at 'NOIR CAFÉ,' an atelier surrounded by plants run by Miki Takeuchi, a lecturer of the Kodo Mishina Taishi-ryu school and a floral designer. Many people who ask about the art of Kodo are curious about the ancient 'Genji-koh' incense game. Genji-koh is a form of kumiko (incense game) still practiced in all schools today. The designs based on the 54 chapters of The Tale of Genji are famous as traditional Japanese patterns known as 'Genji-koh no Zu,' often seen on lacquerware and kimonos. In this experience, you can get a digest version of what Genji-koh is like at an incense gathering, learning how to listen to the scents and provide your answers. This plan is perfect for those who find seiza (sitting on the floor) difficult or feel that formal incense gatherings are too intimidating, yet are still interested in what Genji-koh is all about. After enjoying Genji-koh, you will create your own scent just like the aristocrats of the Heian period, when The Tale of Genji was written. As depicted in The Tale of Genji, where scent is a recurring theme, aristocrats would scent their kimonos with elaborate, original fragrances. In this plan, you will blend your own original natural ingredients to create a scented sachet (nioi-bukuro). Take home your finished sachet in a special paulownia box, designed and arranged by top designer Miki Takeuchi with dried flowers inspired by The Tale of Genji, to be used as a special incense burner. After the experience, we will serve edible incense. Enjoy medicinal tea and incense-inspired sweets. Spend an elegant time in a space that feels like a time-warp into a non-ordinary world for both mind and body.
