The Ine Funaya are traditional wooden boathouses uniquely built directly on the water's edge. Their ground floor serves as a boat garage, while the upper floor functions as a living space. This distinct architectural style gives the impression that the houses are floating on the sea, contributing to Ine's nickname as "Kyoto's Venice." They are meticulously designed to support both fishing activities and daily life, showcasing a harmonious blend of function and tradition.
During an Ine Bay cruise, visitors can gain a unique perspective of the Funaya boathouses, admiring their waterside architecture from the clear bay waters. A key highlight is the opportunity to interact closely with seagulls, as they often fly alongside the boat, creating a memorable and engaging encounter. This allows for stunning photographic opportunities and a deeper connection with the tranquil marine environment of Ine Bay.
In addition to the iconic Funaya boathouses, the Ine area boasts other significant attractions. Amanohashidate, recognized as one of Japan's three most scenic views, offers a stunning sandbar adorned with pine trees, best observed from the Hiryukan Observatory via cable car. Another notable site is Chion-ji Temple, a historic spiritual center, famous for its Manjusri Bodhisattva and unique fan-shaped omikuji (fortune slips), attracting visitors seeking academic and career blessings.
Exploring Funaya Street and Ine Bay offers a serene and picturesque journey into traditional Japanese coastal life. Visitors can stroll along the charming street, experiencing an atmosphere that harks back to the Edo period as they admire the unique boathouse architecture. The tranquil ambiance of the clear waters in Ine Bay further enhances this immersive experience, making it an ideal destination for photography, quiet contemplation, and savoring the peaceful fishing village charm.
To fully appreciate Amanohashidate, visitors should take the cable car or lift to the Hiryukan Observatory. From this elevated vantage point, one can overlook the expansive, pine tree-lined sandbar, which appears as a "bridge in the sky." A popular tradition, known as "matanozoki," involves bending over and looking at the scenery upside down between your legs. This unique perspective is said to transform the landscape into a dragon ascending to the heavens, offering an enhanced, magical view.
Chion-ji Temple, with centuries of rich history, is highly revered as one of Japan's three great Monju temples dedicated to Manjusri Bodhisattva, the deity of wisdom. Visitors often come to pray for academic success and career advancement. The temple is also renowned for its distinctive fan-shaped omikuji (fortune slips) that are tied to pine trees, providing a unique cultural and spiritual experience for those exploring its grounds.
Yes, during the Ine Bay cruise, a popular and engaging activity is feeding the numerous seagulls that often accompany the boat. Visitors can bring small snacks, such as shrimp crackers, to offer to the birds. This creates a lively and memorable interaction, allowing for close encounters with the marine birds and adding an element of joy and charm to the scenic boat ride amidst the iconic Funaya boathouses.
The Funaya Observation Deck is an essential stop in Ine due to its unparalleled panoramic views of Ine Bay, widely regarded as one of the world's most beautiful bays. From this elevated position, visitors gain a comprehensive appreciation of the unique cluster of traditional Funaya boathouses lining the shore, creating the iconic "Venice of Kyoto" scene. It is the perfect vantage point for capturing breathtaking photographs and fully understanding the village's distinctive layout.
