The Wufeng Lin Family is one of Taiwan's five prominent families. During the Qing Dynasty, they were granted official titles and the camphor monopoly for assisting in quelling the Dai Chaichun rebellion, which laid the foundation for their substantial wealth. Family members achieved remarkable success in military, political, and cultural fields, such as Lin Wenza and Lin Chaodong. Their contributions and influence made the Lin family the most influential noble family in central Taiwan.
We recommend allocating approximately 2 to 3 hours for your visit to the Wufeng Lin Family Ancestral Residence Park. This duration will allow you to thoroughly explore key areas like the Gongbao Residence, the Grand Flower Hall, and the Jingxun Building, gaining a deep understanding of their architectural features, historical stories, and cultural background. If you join a guided tour, you will have more ample time.
The Jingxun Building was the main residence built by Lin Dianguo, a member of the Dingcuo branch of the Wufeng Lin Family, and it is also the former residence of Lin Chaodong, the eldest son of Lin Wenza. The architectural style blends features of official residences and civilian homes, showcasing the Lin family's significant position in Taiwan's history. Its exquisite carvings and paintings are also of great artistic value.
To travel to the Wufeng Lin Family Ancestral Residence Park from Taichung Railway Station, we recommend using public transportation. You can take Taichung Bus routes 201, 202, or 203, or Ubus route 50 from the bus station opposite Taichung Railway Station. Alight at the 'Wufeng Lin Family Ancestral Residence' stop, and it's about a 5-minute walk to the destination. The journey takes approximately 40-50 minutes.
The Wufeng Lin Family Ancestral Residence Park preserves Taiwan's most complete collection of Qing Dynasty official residences. Its distinctive features include: the Gongbao Residence (Taiwan's only extant first-rank official residence from the Qing Dynasty, renowned for its five-bay, eleven-section layout), the Grand Flower Hall (Taiwan's only Fuzhou-style opera stage building, combining theatrical and banquet functions), and the Jingxun Building (an exquisite Fujian-style official residence blending Chinese and Western styles).
The Grand Flower Hall is one of the most famous structures in the Wufeng Lin Family Ancestral Residence Park. Its unique feature is that it is the only extant Fuzhou-style opera stage in Taiwan. This building combines the functions of theatrical performances and banquet spaces. In the past, it was an important venue for the family to entertain distinguished guests and host banquets. It has also served as a filming location for music videos of numerous popular Taiwanese and Japanese divas, possessing significant historical and cultural artistic value.
For first-time visitors to the Wufeng Lin Family Ancestral Residence Park, we suggest following the route of the 'Gongbao Residence,' 'Grand Flower Hall,' and 'Jingxun Building,' which represents the main visiting path through the Lin family's architectural complex. Highlights include experiencing the imposing grandeur of the Gongbao Residence, admiring the exquisite opera stage and paintings in the Grand Flower Hall, and exploring the architectural details and family stories within the Jingxun Building. These will provide a comprehensive understanding of the Lin family's history and culture.
As a national historical monument, the value of the Wufeng Lin Family Ancestral Residence Park is manifested in many ways. It is not only Taiwan's most complete extant official residence from the Qing Dynasty, reflecting the architectural craftsmanship and social hierarchy of that era, but it also embodies the Lin family's significant contributions to Taiwan's modern history, including land reclamation, defense against foreign aggression, and the promotion of culture and education. It is a precious asset for understanding Taiwan's social development and the culture of prominent families.
