On the morning of April 11th, I booked a KKDay itinerary to Gyeongju, the ancient capital of Silla. First, we visited Seokguram Grottoes, a World Heritage Site, then Bulguksa Temple. Although listed as a World Heritage Site, it felt so-so, as its area had shrunk due to war damage, and the surrounding cherry blossoms had all faded. The tour guide explained that after Korea's liberation, the Japanese cut down all the cherry trees and burned down the shrines. Later, they discovered that Korea had its own cherry blossom varieties, so they began planting cherry trees extensively again in 1962. Korean cherry blossoms are whiter and have larger petals than Japanese ones, and they are in no way inferior. The fact that they cut down all the cherry trees back then shows the extreme nature of the Korean character. After all, what did the trees do wrong? The cherry trees that remain today are centuries old and have great tourist value! At noon, we ate Korean barbecue at Bulguksa Temple. I really like Korean side dishes, especially kimchi, which is better than Taiwanese kimchi; I always wanted a refill. After a satisfying meal, we visited Donggung Wolji Pond, a former palace renovated by Park Chung-hee in the 1970s and now a park. The walkways are paved with a material resembling straw rope, which was very comfortable to walk on – a first for me and quite unique! Next, we went to the adjacent Grand Cemetery, where tulips were in full bloom, a beautiful sight. Several small hills were originally the tombs of ancient emperors and empresses. One of them, Cheonma Tomb, was excavated, revealing treasures buried within, now housed in the Gyeongju Museum. The shops along the scenic roads attracted passing tourists. We ate strawberry daifuku and corn ice cream. Prices in the tourist area are relatively high, which is a way to boost the local economy!
If you like sunrise and sunset, this is the best opportunity to see the bright, burning, blazing ball set against a colorful palette of colours. As you sit snugged in the cozy capsule, let the air wash over you with the tranquility of the ocean and beauty of Busan. The restaurant the organisers took us offered quality food (my family unanimously agreed it was one of the best we had eaten in Busan). Generous and fresh offering of fish and beef. Seal the night with a panoramic view of the city, its lights and a brief beautiful history of Busan. The history gives you an insight why Busan is considered a peaceful city. Of course, this trip is made complete and fun with our tour Korean guide — Christina—who speaks impeccably good English, by Korean standard. We love her leadership, friendliness, imagination and spontaneity, when she volunteers to take photos for us.
