Morning: Pandas in a Natural Valley

Your private driver and English-speaking guide meet you at your Chengdu hotel. A comfortable 1.5-hour drive west brings you to Dujiangyan Panda Valley, a sprawling natural reserve where giant pandas live in semi-wild enclosures surrounded by bamboo forests and rolling hills.

Watch giant pandas roam freely across large forested areas, climb real trees, and doze in bamboo groves—behaviors much closer to how they would live in the wild. Keep an eye out for the adorable red pandas, who share this valley sanctuary. Smaller, more active, and just as charming as their black-and-white cousins, these russet-furred acrobats are a highlight in their own right. Your guide knows exactly where to spot them. With fewer crowds than the city base, you'll have space and time to observe both species at your own pace.

Midday: A Taste of Sichuan

Lunch is at your own expense. Your guide will recommend an authentic local restaurant in Dujiangyan where you can savor classic Sichuan dishes. Your guide is happy to assist with menu translation and ordering.

Afternoon: A 2,200-Year-Old Engineering Marvel

After lunch, arrive at the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been taming the Min River for over two millennia—and still functions today. Your guide walks you along the riverbank, explaining how Li Bing and his son designed this system without a single dam. Cross the swaying Anlan Suspension Bridge, stand at the Fish Mouth Levee, and visit Baopingkou, the bottleneck channel carved through solid rock.

Late Afternoon: Ancient Town & Panda Sculpture

Just steps from the irrigation site lies Guanxian Ancient Town, a living piece of history that has flourished alongside the water system for centuries. Stroll its stone-paved lanes with your guide, pause at the elegant South Bridge spanning the Min River, and learn how this town evolved from a Qin Dynasty water management outpost into a vibrant cultural hub.

Before heading back to Chengdu, stop at the famous giant panda selfie sculpture in Yangtianwo Square—a beloved Instagram landmark where a massive panda reclines with a phone in paw. Snap a few photos to round out a day dedicated to Sichuan's most iconic animal and its greatest engineering achievement.

Return to Chengdu

Your driver returns you to your Chengdu hotel, carrying memories of pandas, ancient engineering, and an old town that time forgot.
