The Poon Hill trek is typically a 3 day journey, starting from Nayapul, a small town easily accessible from Pokhara, Nepal’s adventure hub. The trek reaches a maximum elevation of 3,210 meters (10,532 feet) at Poon Hill, which is famous for its sunrise views over the Himalayas. The trek is considered moderate, making it suitable for beginners and experienced trekkers alike. The best times to embark on this trek are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons when the weather is clear and temperatures are moderate.
Day-by-Day Itinerary Day 1: Pokhara to Nayapul and Trek to Tikhedhunga/Ulleri The journey begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, taking about 1-2 hours. From Nayapul, trekkers start their hike towards Tikhedhunga or Ulleri, a trek that typically takes 4-6 hours. This initial leg of the trek introduces trekkers to lush landscapes, terraced fields, and the charming local villages of the region.
Day 2: Tikhedhunga/Ulleri to Ghorepani The second day involves a steep ascent from Tikhedhunga/Ulleri to Ghorepani, taking approximately 5-7 hours. This part of the trek is known for its beautiful rhododendron forests and the impressive views of the surrounding mountains. Ghorepani, a picturesque village, serves as a significant stopover for trekkers heading to Poon Hill.
Day 3: Ghorepani to Poon Hill and Trek to Nayapul An early morning hike to Poon Hill is the highlight of the trek. The 45-minute to 1-hour climb is rewarded with a stunning sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The sight of the sun illuminating the snow-capped peaks is a mesmerizing experience. After soaking in the views, trekkers return to Ghorepani for breakfast before heading towards Nayapul, a trek that takes about 7-8 hours through forests rich in flora and fauna.
