Product Info

- Attraction Introduction -

  • Fushimi Inari-taisha
The filming location for the movie 'Memoirs of a Geisha', it is famous for the 'Senbon Torii', a long red corridor formed by thousands of vermilion torii gates. Legend has it that the god of agriculture resides here, protecting the locals and granting bountiful harvests, prosperous business, and traffic safety. Foxes are considered the messengers of the deity; they have been regarded as sacred animals since ancient times, as they hunt insects and birds in the fields, allowing crops to thrive.

  • Kiyomizu-dera (World Cultural Heritage)
There is a Japanese saying, 'to jump off the stage of Kiyomizu', which means to make a firm resolution. This magnificent stage, standing on a steep cliff, was built entirely without a single nail, using 139 large logs. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the streets of Kyoto. Down the stone steps is the Otowa Waterfall, where the clear spring water is divided into three streams. It is said that drinking the water can bring blessings of 'academic success, love, and longevity'. Especially during the spring when cherry blossoms are in full bloom and the autumn season when maple leaves turn vibrant red, travelers from all over the world flock here in endless streams.

  • Kinkaku-ji (World Cultural Heritage)
The Shariden (Reliquary Hall) enshrines the relics of Shakyamuni Buddha. Its outer walls are covered in gold leaf, which glitters in the bright sun, hence its beautiful name. Its formal name is actually Rokuon-ji, a Zen temple of the Shokoku-ji school of the Rinzai sect. The garden and architecture centered around the Kinkaku are considered a representation of the Pure Land. The reflection of the Kinkaku in the Kyoko-chi (Mirror Pond) is the highlight of this pavilion.

  • Arashiyama
When it comes to viewing maple leaves and cherry blossoms in Kyoto, one must mention Arashiyama! The 'Togetsukyo Bridge' spanning the Katsura River is an iconic landmark here. In addition, the Sagano Bamboo Forest tunnel, a 100-meter-long bamboo path, makes you feel as if you are in a fairyland. Sunlight filters through the trees, highlighting the lush green bamboo. The 'Nonomiya Shrine', a shrine dedicated to the god of marriage known for granting wishes, is hidden here. Inside the shrine, there is a 'Turtle Stone' filled with spiritual energy. Legend has it that if you make a wish while touching the stone, it will come true within a year!

FAQ

1. How much time is typically recommended to explore Arashiyama and its key sites?

To thoroughly explore Arashiyama and its main attractions, including the Bamboo Grove, Tenryu-ji Temple, and Togetsukyo Bridge, a half-day visit of approximately 3 to 4 hours is generally recommended. This allows sufficient time to enjoy the scenery, visit temples, and browse local shops at a relaxed pace without feeling rushed.

2. Is there an entrance fee to visit the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove?

The main path through the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is generally free to access and walk through. However, some of the temples and gardens located within or adjacent to the Arashiyama area, such as the renowned Tenryu-ji Temple, do have separate admission fees that contribute to their maintenance and preservation.

3. Is it feasible to visit Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Kinkaku-ji, and Kiyomizu Temple in a single day?

Visiting all four major Kyoto attractions – Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), and Kiyomizu Temple – in a single day is ambitious but certainly achievable with efficient planning. An organized day tour often provides streamlined transportation and a structured itinerary, maximizing your time at each significant site.

4. What unique characteristics define Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine as a Kyoto attraction?

Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine is most notably characterized by its thousands of vibrant orange torii gates, which form a captivating, winding path up Mount Inari. These gates are donated by individuals and companies, creating a mesmerizing tunnel-like experience. The shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice and sake, and foxes, believed to be Inari's messengers, are prominent throughout the grounds.

5. What are the highlights of visiting Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) and Kiyomizu Temple?

Kinkaku-ji, or the Golden Pavilion, is renowned for its stunning top two floors entirely covered in gold leaf, reflecting beautifully in the surrounding pond and garden. Kiyomizu Temple is famous for its large wooden stage, supported by hundreds of pillars, offering panoramic views of Kyoto. The temple is also known for Otowa Waterfall, where visitors can drink from three streams, each believed to grant a different blessing.

6. What transportation options are best for traveling between Kyoto's major attractions like Arashiyama and Kiyomizu Temple?

For efficient travel between Kyoto's major attractions, a combination of public transportation is often recommended. You can use the JR Sagano Line to reach Arashiyama, and then city buses or taxis to connect to sites like Kiyomizu Temple or Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Organized day tours provide the convenience of pre-arranged private transportation, which can save time and effort navigating transfers.
