Mt. Fuji 5th Station serves as a popular base for climbers and tourists. It features several souvenir shops offering local goods, restaurants, and a post office where visitors can send postcards with a special Mt. Fuji postmark. There's also a small shrine, Komitake Shrine, providing prayers for safe climbing and travel. The station offers stunning panoramic views of the Fuji Five Lakes area and often provides opportunities to see the summit of Mt. Fuji up close on clear days.
The hike from Mt. Fuji 5th Station to the summit typically takes 5-7 hours for ascent and 3-5 hours for descent, depending on the chosen trail, such as the Yoshida Trail, and individual pace. This is a challenging climb requiring good physical condition and proper preparation. Most climbers opt to stay overnight in a mountain hut near the summit to rest before a sunrise ascent. The official climbing season is generally from early July to early September.
Even at the 5th Station, the weather can be unpredictable. In summer, layering is crucial: include a light jacket for warmth, waterproof outerwear for rain, comfortable walking shoes, and sun protection. In cooler seasons, warm winter clothing, such as a thick coat, hat, gloves, and waterproof boots, is essential, as temperatures can drop significantly. Always check the weather forecast before your visit and be prepared for sudden changes.
Mt. Fuji 5th Station is primarily accessible by bus, especially during the climbing season. Buses depart regularly from Kawaguchiko Station or Fujisan Station. Alternatively, many organized day tours from Tokyo include the 5th Station as a stop, offering convenient transportation and eliminating the need for self-navigation. While driving is an option, private vehicle access may be restricted during peak season, requiring transfers from designated parking lots to shuttle buses.
Visitors to Mt. Fuji 5th Station can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including the majestic Fuji Five Lakes and distant plains, often situated above the cloud line. It serves as a popular photo spot for capturing the iconic peak. Beyond the views, visitors can explore local souvenir shops, enjoy refreshments at restaurants, and experience the unique atmosphere of a mountain base station, whether preparing for a climb or simply visiting.
Oshino Hakkai is a picturesque traditional Japanese village featuring eight crystal-clear ponds fed by melted snow from Mt. Fuji, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can explore the charming village, admire the traditional thatched-roof houses, and observe koi fish swimming in the pristine ponds. The area also hosts small museums, souvenir shops, and local food stalls selling regional delicacies. On clear days, the ponds offer stunning reflective views of Mt. Fuji.
The most ideal time to experience the vibrant maple foliage at Lake Kawaguchi's Maple Corridor (Momiji Kairo) and Oishi Park is typically from late October to mid-November. During this period, the trees along the corridor and surrounding the park transform into brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, creating spectacular autumn scenery with Mt. Fuji as a stunning backdrop. Evening illuminations at the Maple Corridor are often held during the peak season.
Lake Yamanaka, one of the Fuji Five Lakes, offers diverse activities for visitors. You can enjoy swan boat rides on the lake, cycle along its scenic shores, or take a leisurely walk to appreciate the natural beauty. The lake is also a popular spot for fishing, windsurfing, and various other water sports. During colder months, the phenomenon of Diamond Fuji, where the sun aligns with Mt. Fuji's peak at sunrise or sunset, can be observed. The surrounding area features hot springs and picturesque viewpoints of Mt. Fuji.
