Hakone Shrine is renowned for its distinctive red torii gate rising dramatically from Lake Ashi, creating a stunning photo opportunity. It is also famous as a spiritual power spot, deeply rooted in Japanese history and culture, offering a serene atmosphere for visitors seeking blessings and tranquility amidst nature. The shrine has a long history, dating back over 1,200 years, and is dedicated to three Hakone deities.
Hakone Shrine is linked to the legend of the Nine-Headed Dragon (Kuzuryu), believed to reside at the bottom of Lake Ashi. This powerful dragon was once a malevolent force, but was pacified by the priest Mangan and now acts as a guardian deity of Hakone. The shrine holds a special Kuzuryu Shrine where visitors pray for good fortune, business prosperity, and matchmaking.
While direct, unobstructed views of Mount Fuji from within Hakone Shrine itself can be limited due to its location among tall trees, Mount Fuji is often visible from other spots around Lake Ashi. Good viewing points include during a Hakone Pirate Ship cruise on Lake Ashi or from various vantage points on the Hakone Ropeway, especially on clear days.
The Hakone Pirate Ship cruise offers a unique way to experience Lake Ashi's beauty. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including glimpses of Mount Fuji on clear days, and see the iconic torii gate of Hakone Shrine from the water. The ship's unique design, resembling a historical pirate vessel, adds to the fun and creates memorable photo opportunities.
At Owakudani, visitors can witness an active volcanic zone characterized by steaming vents and sulfurous fumes, offering a dramatic natural spectacle. It's often reached by the Hakone Ropeway, providing aerial views of the landscape. A unique experience here is trying the "Kuro Tamago," black eggs boiled in the natural hot springs, believed to extend one's life.
The Hakone Ropeway provides breathtaking aerial views as it glides over the landscape. From the Ropeway, visitors can enjoy expansive vistas of Lake Ashi, the surrounding Hakone mountains, and the active volcanic valley of Owakudani below. On clear days, the Ropeway offers some of the most spectacular and unobstructed views of Mount Fuji.
Enoshima Island offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore Enoshima Shrine, dedicated to Benten, a goddess of music and good fortune. The island also features various caves, a botanical garden, and observation decks providing panoramic views of the coastline, Sagami Bay, and on clear days, Mount Fuji. The island's charming streets are lined with shops and restaurants.
To reach Hakone Shrine from central Tokyo, common methods include taking a train, such as the Odakyu Romancecar, to Odawara or Hakone-Yumoto, then transferring to a local bus or Hakone Tozan Railway. For a more convenient and direct experience that includes multiple Hakone attractions, many travelers opt for guided bus tours departing from Tokyo, which handle all transportation between sites like Hakone Shrine and other points of interest.
