『Anping Old Street』
Tainan Anping Old Street (Yanping Street, Zhongxing Street, Xiaozhong Street) is known as "Taiwan's No. 1 Street". It was the first street built by the Dutch in Taiwan more than 300 years ago. The busiest Yanping Street was widened in 1995, so its historical sense is relatively weak; on the contrary, Zhongxing Street and Xiaozhong Street are relatively well preserved and more suitable for visiting ancient sites.
Chihkan Tower
Tainan Chihkan Tower was formerly Fort Provintia, which was built by the Dutch in 1652. It is one of the two major historical sites in Tainan, along with Anping Fort. A pilgrimage is a must when visiting Tainan. The real Fort Provintia was actually destroyed in the Qing Dynasty. The Chihkan Tower we see now is composed of the Wenchang Pavilion of the Poseidon Temple and some of the remains of Fort Provintia.
Tickets to Tainan's historic sites are all priced the same, including Chihkan Tower, Anping Fort, Anping Tree House, and Eternal Golden City. Full-price tickets are NT$50 and half-price tickets are NT$25.
Those who are not eligible for half-price discount (students, police and firefighters, seniors over 65 years old...)
Anping Fort
In the early 17th century, the Dutch, with a combination of military and commercial forces, occupied today's Anping in 1624 and built Fort Zeelandia as its defensive fortress. The entire project was completed in 1634. After Zheng Chenggong conquered the Dutch city in 1662, it was renamed Anping Town and the inner city was renamed Neifu. Taiwanese people therefore called it Wangcheng. During the Qing Dynasty, the Taijiang land floating lost its importance, and the Qing soldiers destroyed Fort Zeelandia to build the Yizai Jincheng, so it gradually became deserted. It was rebuilt after the Japanese occupation and was called "Anping Fort" after World War II. At present, the only real Dutch period remains are the brick walls of the outer city south wall in front of the fort. The old banyan tree has twisted roots and infinite vicissitudes, witnessing the history of Taijiang for nearly 400 years.
『Anping Tree House』
The tree house is located behind the Tak Kee Company. It was originally the company's warehouse, built around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the Japanese occupation. It was once used as a branch warehouse of the Great Nippon Salt Company. The current size is the result of the expansion by the Japanese.
After more than a hundred years of vicissitudes, the walls of the warehouse are covered with the aerial roots of the banyan trees. The dense crown of the towering banyan trees seems to have become the roof of the warehouse, giving the Anping Tree House a rare appearance and mysterious atmosphere, forming a unique house-tree symbiosis wonder, similar to the big trees entwined around the "Ta Prohm Temple" in Angkor Wat.
"Golden City of Eternal Life"
Eternal Golden Castle is located in Jincheng Village, Tainan City, near Anping, Tainan. Eternal Golden Castle is the first Western-style fort on Taiwan Island and the first fort equipped with the "Arms Grand Cannon". It can be said to be an epoch-making milestone in the history of Taiwan's forts. Eternal Golden Castle was formerly known as the "Erkunshen Fort", and some people also called it the "Sankunshen Fort". The so-called Erkunshen is the name of the sandbar islands listed on the west bank of the Taijiang River in the past. At that time, Anping Fort was located in the first Kunshen, and Eternal Golden Castle was located in the second Kunshen. However, due to the siltation of the port, the sandbars were gradually connected together. The reason for its construction at that time was to deal with the Japanese invasion of Taiwan. Eternal Golden Castle was built by the Chinese and designed by French designers. During the battle, British and German cannons and American rifles were used, which was full of Western flavor!
Tainan Art Museum
The art and cultural area of Tainan City is finally completed! Following the renovation and opening of the first building of Tainan Museum of Art (Southern Art Museum) last year, the second building designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Shigeru Ban was finally completed on the eve of the 2019 Lunar New Year; an old building full of the elegance of the old times meets another white art community that implements the master's traditional natural minimalist style, showing the new energy of art in the ancient capital!
Unlike the 86-year-old Tainan Police Station No. 1, which was restored, the No. 2 building is located on the site of the Tainan Shrine in the 1920s. In the past, the Haidong Academy, the Tainan Museum, and the Confucius Temple, which are still preserved today, were built here. It can be said to be the cultural and educational center of Tainan. Currently, the new building of the No. 2 building is located on the basement parking lot and park of Gongyi. It was designed by Taiwanese architect Shi Zhaoyong and Shigeru Ban Architects (SBA). The overall image of stacking boxes at different angles is used to create a lot of semi-outdoor space for the building. This outdoor platform with a shade effect can not only block direct sunlight, but also provide ventilation, providing more opportunities for the public to appreciate the surrounding greenery.
