— What You Can Expect —

Love jagged snow-capped mountains? In the western part of Nagano Prefecture, Kamikochi is a tourist resort and summer resort on the upper reaches of the Azusa River in the southern part of the Hida Mountains.  The elevation is about 1,500 meters. The entire area belongs to Matsumoto City, which is part of the Chubu Mountains National Park and is a national cultural property. There are hot springs here, and it is also basecamp for climbing Mt. Hotaka and Mt. Gun. The name of Kamikochi comes from the hiragana name "かみこうち" of "Kamigaki". "Kamigakichi" refers to the fact that the Hodaka Shrine worships the god "Hodaka Mikoto" (ほたかみのみこと) who descended to Mount Hodaka and offered sacrifices here at Hodaka Shrine Okumiya and Myojin Pond. In order to protect the natural environment, all private cars are not allowed to enter.

— Additional Info —

  • Taisho Pond is a volcanic lake formed by the eruption of Mount Yake in 1915. The "dead standing trees" in the lake will present different dreamy scenes during different seasons of the year.
  • Tashiro Pond is a shallow wetland. The new greenery in May, the fiery red and yellow foliage in October, and the pristine ice in late autumn are all unforgettable scenery.
  • Kappa Bridge is the most symbolic attraction in Kamikochi, just a 5-minute walk from the bus center. From the bridge, you can see the Hotaka Mountains, Mt. Yake and the shimmering surface of the Azusa River. The long holidays in May, the summer vacation, and the autumn foliage season will attract many leaf-peepers from Japan and abroad!
  • Myojin Pond, also known as "Mirror Pond" in the past, is a holy ground located within Hotaka-jinja Okunomiya, behind Kamikochi. The Hiragana for Kamikochi comes from Hotaka Shrine and its deity Hotakami no Mikoto. The pond is about 2.8 km (55-min walk) from Kamikochi's transport terminal. Entry fee: JP¥500
