Explore the medieval town of Kutná Hora on this full-day trip from Prague — a Sandemans classic we've been offering for 20 years, led by knowledgeable local guides who bring Bohemian history to life.
Meet us at the Czech Railway Main Ticket Office (České dráhy), in the center of Prague's main train station, and settle in for a scenic train ride through the Bohemian countryside — the perfect way to ease into the day before you arrive. We find that taking the train is the most comfortable way to make the day-trip, as it avoids road construction delays and allows our guests access to bathrooms throughout the journey.
Once in Kutná Hora, step into the ghoulish Sedlec Ossuary, a true highlight of the day that draws visitors from around the world. Beyond the piles of skulls and bones, you'll discover why this UNESCO-listed gem is home to so much more than its macabre reputation suggests. The Ossuary now operates on strict 30-minute timed-entry slots, and walk-up visitors are regularly turned away once a day's slots sell out. Your guide pre-books your group's entry days in advance, so this is one less thing to worry about on our tour.
We then take a short ride on a local bus to the Gothic St. Barbara's Church, one of Bohemia's most stunning cathedrals, before wandering through the historic streets that once made Kutná Hora the economic powerhouse of the Kingdom of Bohemia. It's also a UNESCO World Heritage site in its own right, and many guests tell us that if they'd known about St. Barbara's beforehand, it alone would have been worth the trip
Along the way, admire the Sankturin House, Bohemia's oldest Cistercian Monastery, the fabulous Italian Court, medieval Ruthardka Street, the Stone House, and the Plague Column. Your guide will bring the town's rich past to life, from its pivotal role in the 15th-century Hussite Wars to the silver mining boom that funded the Prague Groschen — once the hard currency of Central Europe — and made Kutná Hora rich enough to rival Prague itself, becoming a favored residence for Bohemian kings.
Good to know: this is a full, active day, combining train travel with a fair amount of walking on uneven, cobbled, and sloped terrain, so comfortable shoes are a must. Lunch breaks run on the shorter side if the train is delayed, so if you prefer a leisurely meal, we recommend grabbing a snack at the Main Station or along the way to keep you fueled between stops.
