Shirakawa-go Gassho Village is world-famous for its unique Gassho-zukuri (thatched-roof) houses. It is listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO and is one of Japan's most popular tourist attractions. Gassho-zukuri is a special architectural style in which the roof is made of stacked thatches and is shaped like two palms placed together, hence the name (in Japanese).
