There are different theories regarding the origin of the name Tseung Kwan O. One legend suggests that in the late Southern Song Dynasty, Emperor Bing and his entourage fled to the Kowloon Peninsula, and the 'Tseung Kwan' (General) here might have been a loyal general. Early Tseung Kwan O was a sparsely populated bay, with Hang Hau Village as the main settlement. There was also Tseung Kwan O Village at the northern end of the bay. Another theory suggests that a general died in battle here during the Ming Dynasty, hence the name.
