Suizenji Jojuen Garden

A leisurely stroll around Suizenji Jojuen Garden typically takes about 30-40 minutes. You can explore various attractions within the garden such as Izumi Shrine and Nogakuden, as well as a monument to Soseki Natsume. The garden is beautifully adorned with plum trees, cherry trees, and pine trees, offering a stunning spectacle throughout the year.

The origins of Suizenji Jojuen Garden date back to 1632 when Hosokawa Tadatoshi, the first feudal lord to rule the Higo province, established Suizenji Temple beside the serene lake. The temple was later moved, and a traditional tea house was constructed in its place, creating the beautiful garden we see today.

While the garden's origins are linked to the Zen temple of Suizen-ji, it began as a chashitsu for the Japanese tea ceremony around 1636. Hosokawa Tadatoshi, the first daimyō of Kumamoto, chose this location for its pristine spring-fed pond, whose clear water was ideal for preparing tea.

To reach Suizenji Jojuen Garden, take the JR Hohi Main Line towards Higo Ozu and alight at 'Shin-Suizenji Station,' which is about a 7-minute journey. From there, it's a pleasant 10-minute walk to the garden. Alternatively, you can take the city tram from 'Kumamoto Ekimae' bound for Kenguncho, disembarking at 'Suizenji Park' (approximately 34 minutes), followed by a short 4-minute walk.

Within Suizenji Jojuen Garden, visitors should not miss Izumi Shrine, the traditional Nogakuden stage, and the monument dedicated to the renowned author Soseki Natsume. The meticulously landscaped grounds themselves, with their seasonal floral displays and evergreen trees, are a primary attraction.
