Okinawa and Other Islands

Okinawa Prefecture is comprised of a chain of islands known as the Ryukyu Islands. Key island groups within this chain include the larger Okinawa Island itself, home to Naha, the vibrant Kerama Islands like Tokashiki and Zamami, the breathtaking Miyako Islands, and the natural wonders of the Yaeyama Islands such as Ishigaki and Iriomote. Islands immediately surrounding Okinawa main island include the beautiful Kerama Islands, such as Tokashiki, Zamami, and Aka. These are easily accessible by ferry and are renowned for their crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and are a popular spot for whale watching during the winter months.

Determining the single 'most beautiful' island near Okinawa is subjective, as many boast stunning natural appeal. However, Miyako Island is frequently praised for its pristine white-sand beaches and emerald waters. Iriomote Island captivates with its dense subtropical jungles and unique ecosystem, while Taketomi Island offers a glimpse into traditional Okinawan life with its charming water buffalo cart rides.
