Kusatsu Onsen is definitely worth a visit in 2025. Having visited quite a few hot spring towns over the years, I was very impressed by Kusatsu's atmosphere and onsen. Hidden in the Gunma mountains, Kusatsu Onsen feels like a charming little town and is especially beautiful in the evening when the Yubatake is lit up.

Yes, you can. While many traditional onsens in Japan still prohibit tattoos, Kusatsu Onsen offers a growing number of tattoo-friendly hot springs that welcome both locals and tourists with body art. These include public bathhouses, private onsens, and ryokan that do not require tattoo cover-ups.

Once in the changing area you will need to undress completely (no clothes, underwear or swimwear are permitted in the bathing area). You can leave your belongings in the designated baskets or lockers. If you like, you can take a small modesty towel with you to cover the important bits.
