Kobo Seikan is a facility that combines a workshop, shop, and cafe, where you can observe the manufacturing process of Yamanaka lacquerware, try your hand at woodturning, shop for goods, and enjoy cafe drinks and sweets served in lacquerware. This course includes a workshop tour (with explanations), a vase-making session, and a lacquerware cafe experience (includes 1 drink). Our lacquerware artisans work here daily. In this experience, you can observe their work up close and learn about the lacquerware manufacturing process. Our staff will provide easy-to-understand explanations. Next, you will create your own original lacquer-painted chopsticks in the very space where the artisans work. You will design your chopsticks and paint them using genuine Urushi lacquer for an authentic experience. Our lacquer artisans will guide you carefully, allowing you to take your time and craft your own piece until completion. You will surely be satisfied with the result. It is a fun experience! Afterward, you can enjoy a drink served in lacquerware at our cafe, or even try some sweets. Please relax and enjoy the lacquerware experience. Feel free to ask our staff or artisans if you have any questions. While there is a risk of skin irritation from Urushi, we will check with you beforehand and provide gloves to ensure it does not touch your skin, so even small children can participate. If you feel any skin abnormalities, please inform our staff immediately. Please note in advance that our shop cannot be held responsible in the unlikely event that a rash occurs. Get an up-close look at a Yamanaka lacquerware workshop
Lacquerware workshops are usually divided into specialized tasks, so it is rare to see various processes in one place. However, here at Kobo Seikan, you can observe several integrated processes, including woodturning, lacquer painting, and maki-e (sprinkled lacquer decoration). It is a very rare workshop where you can see artisans at work up close. Our staff will also explain each process, helping you understand lacquerware in an easy-to-follow way.
Experience authentic Urushi lacquer application on chopsticks
This is an authentic lacquer-painting experience where lacquer artisans will guide you gently and carefully. In this plan, rather than making vessels that require advanced techniques, you will design and paint your own original chopsticks. You will learn how to handle Urushi, as well as its properties, broadening your knowledge of lacquerware for a highly satisfying experience. Liquid Urushi can cause rashes and is potentially dangerous. However, we ensure a safe experience with sufficient knowledge and expertise, so please rest assured. Small children can also participate. *Children up to the 4th grade of elementary school must be accompanied by a guardian. The finished work will be handed over or mailed to you at a later date. *In rare cases, symptoms such as itching may occur. In such cases, we will refrain from letting you continue the experience.

What You Can Expect

Duration: 2 hour(s)

Reception and changing into work clothes. We will explain the flow of today's experience and 'urushi (lacquer) rash,' and you will change into work clothes to prepare. (5 minutes)
Tour of the lacquerware process and workshop. You will observe each process of the workshop through the glass. Staff will explain the history of Yamanaka lacquerware and each process in an easy-to-understand manner. (15 minutes)
Start the chopstick lacquer painting experience. You will learn how to handle and apply lacquer from a lacquer artisan, and then paint your own chopsticks. Enjoy the excitement and thrill of lacquer painting.
A break at the cafe. After the lacquer painting experience, please enjoy a drink at the cafe. It will be served in a lacquerware cup. Why not enjoy some delicious sweets as well?

Stains on clothes and belongings ・If lacquer gets on your clothes or bags, it cannot be removed. Please participate in clothes that you do not mind getting dirty. 3. Requests for safety ・Be sure to wear gloves and an apron, and do not touch the lacquer with your bare hands. ・If lacquer accidentally gets on your skin, do not rub it; please inform the staff immediately. *Those with extremely sensitive skin or a history of lacquer allergies should participate at their own discretion. *Please note that we cannot provide compensation for medical expenses, etc., in the unlikely event that you develop symptoms such as a rash.
