—About the exhibition—
Based on Ryuichi Sakamoto's 2017 album "async," the installation piece "async - immersion" consists of video by Shiro Takatani and spatial sound by ZAK.
"async - immersion," which garnered significant attention at "AMBIENT KYOTO 2023," will be revived this summer at the Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo.
This exhibition marks the first time this work will be displayed in Tokyo on a scale equivalent to "AMBIENT KYOTO 2023," which will feature a massive 26.4m wide screen. The sound will be reconfigured to suit the space of the Azabudai Hills Gallery, the venue for the exhibition.
In a time when the relationship between sound and image is constantly changing, the audience's senses are quietly unsettled, leading them deeper into the world of the work.

Ryuichi Sakamoto / Born in Tokyo in 1952. He completed his master's degree at Tokyo University of the Arts. He made his solo debut in 1978 with "Thousand Knives." In the same year, he participated in the formation of YMO. After the group disbanded in 1983, he released albums such as "Ongaku Zukan," "BEAUTY," "async," and "12," and his continued pursuit of innovative sounds earned him worldwide acclaim. In film music, he won numerous awards, including the British Academy Film Award for Best Original Score for "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," and the Academy Award for Best Original Score, Golden Globe Award, and Grammy Award for "The Last Emperor." He also actively crossed boundaries into the art world, composing stage works such as "LIFE" and "TIME," and large-scale installation exhibitions in South Korea, China, and Japan. He frequently addressed environmental and peace issues, founding the forest conservation organization "more trees." Shiro Takatani / In 1984, while a student at Kyoto City University of Arts, he began his activities as a member of "Dumb Type," and has been involved in the production of performances and installation works using various media. Since then, he has performed and exhibited in theaters, museums, and art centers around the world. Since 1998, he has been working on individual projects in parallel with his activities with Dumb Type. His major recent activities include the world premiere of the theater piece "TIME" with Ryuichi Sakamoto at the Netherlands Festival in 2021. In 2022, Dumb Type, with Ryuichi Sakamoto as a new member, presented the new work "2022" at the Japan Pavilion of the Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition. In 2023, the Venice Biennale homecoming exhibition "Dumb Type | 2022: remap" was held at the Artizon Museum (Tokyo). In the spring of 2024, "TIME" was performed at the New National Theatre (Tokyo) and ROHM Theatre Kyoto. Currently, his installation "WINDOWS" is on display at Museum Tower Kyobashi (Tokyo).
The exhibited work "async - immersion" is an installation piece based on Ryuichi Sakamoto's 2017 album "async," composed of video by Shiro Takatani and spatial sound by ZAK. It was first exhibited at <AMBIENT KYOTO 2023> as "Ryuichi Sakamoto + Shiro Takatani | async - immersion 2023" and received a great response. This work can be said to be the culmination of the "async" series, which was developed under the concept of "installation music," a concept that Sakamoto pursued to "install sound three-dimensionally in space." As the title "async" suggests, the video created by Takatani responds to the sound but is not perfectly synchronized. In a time in which the relationship between sound and video is constantly changing, the viewer's senses are quietly wavering and led into the depths of the world of the work. It is not just about watching. It is not just about listening.
