Product Info

  • Enjoy a luxurious private experience immersing yourself in traditional Japanese crafts at Matsui Hon-Wa-Rosoku Kobo, a long-established workshop founded in 1907. Start with a 'painting experience' where you can freely paint your favorite designs using acrylic paints on two traditional Japanese candles (approx. 10cm). A female artisan, who is a master of Japanese candle making, painting, and wick winding, will provide careful support, making it safe and enjoyable for beginners and children. Instruction manuals for the painting experience are available in English and Japanese. Your finished work can be taken home on the same day in an elegant box, along with a special handmade iron candle stand, which you can choose from round, square, or cherry blossom shapes. (This course is titled the Candle Story®️ Course.) After painting, head to a 'manufacturing site tour' of Japanese candles, a traditional craft that is extremely rare even in Japan. You can experience up close the techniques of artisans who finish every process by hand using 100% domestic sumac wax. The processes you can see vary by day, so there is always something new to discover each time you visit. After the tour, you can choose a Japanese candle souvenir. (Up to 20000 yen worth of products. If the amount exceeds 2000 yen, please pay the difference.) We offer a special experience that combines 'painting, workshop tour, and souvenir selection,' allowing you to enjoy the charm of traditional crafts with all five senses. * You may take photos of the artisans and the workshop. You may take videos of yourself. Video recording of the artisans and the workshop is permitted for media coverage only. * The order of the experience may vary. * The required time is 15 minutes for the tour and 1 hour for the painting experience and souvenir selection, totaling about 1 to 1.5 hours.
