Zao's "Snow Monsters," known as Juhyo, form when supercooled water droplets in clouds freeze upon contact with Aomori fir trees. Strong winds then shape this rime ice into fantastical, monstrous figures. Their unique characteristics include their immense size, sculptural shapes, and the dramatic, otherworldly landscape they create across the mountain slopes.
