Product Info

  • Create your very own one-of-a-kind wooden bath bucket. In the Edo period, wooden buckets were an essential part of daily life. However, today, opportunities to see or touch wooden buckets have become increasingly rare. This bath bucket making experience is led by Mr. Kunpei Sugimoto, a wooden bucket craftsman who is passionate about sharing the beauty of wooden buckets and the importance of handiwork. Under Mr. Sugimoto's guidance and explanation, you will craft your own personal bath bucket, approximately 20cm in diameter and 10cm in height.
  • From A to Z of wooden bucket making!
  • While this experience covers only a part of the full process, you will receive a complete explanation of how wooden buckets are made from start to finish. You will learn about the surprising secrets of wooden buckets, such as how straight boards are shaped into a circle and how the buckets hold together without the use of glue or nails, all while enjoying the hands-on experience.
  • Try your hand at making the 'taga' (hoop)
  • The 'taga' is the hoop wrapped around the wooden bucket. The Japanese idiom 'taga ga hazureru' (the hoop comes off), which means to lose one's self-control or discipline, originates from this very part, as the bucket would fall apart without it. By wrapping a hoop made of split and woven bamboo around the bucket, it secures the boards tightly together. In this program, you will experience not only the assembly of the bucket but also the process of creating the hoop itself.
  • Tools you can only use here!?
  • Wooden bucket making involves specialized tools that are rarely seen and not typically used in DIY projects. In this program, under the guidance of Mr. Sugimoto, you will be able to use these authentic tools specifically designed for the craft of wooden bucket making.
