Product Info

【About the Taushubetsu Bridge Walk】

  • For the Taushubetsu River Bridge visit, you will wear rental boots provided on-site and walk about 100m to the base of the bridge. Please wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty, as there may be fallen trees, driftwood, or mud splashes from melting snow along the way. Please note that you cannot participate while wearing a skirt. Since temperatures can drop to single digits in the early morning, we recommend bringing a long-sleeved shirt and a windbreaker.
  • The walk will be divided into two groups. The earliest group is scheduled to depart around 4:50. The order will be announced by the tour director during the tour. For the Taushubetsu visit, you will transfer to a jumbo taxi or small bus and will be sharing the vehicle with other guests.
  • The appearance of the 'Taushubetsu River Bridge' varies depending on factors such as the annual rainfall, so the timing of its visibility changes every year.
  • We will depart early in the morning for the Taushubetsu sightseeing, and breakfast will be served after returning to the hotel.

FAQ

1. Is it necessary to join a tour to visit the Taushubetsu River Bridge?

Visiting the Taushubetsu River Bridge often requires navigating challenging terrain and access is regulated as it is located within a national forest. Joining a guided tour is highly recommended as it ensures safe and legal access, offers expert guidance, and handles all necessary arrangements for a seamless experience.

2. What is the best season to view the Taushubetsu River Bridge and witness its unique phenomena?

The Taushubetsu River Bridge is famously known as the 'Phantom Bridge' because it only appears during the dry season. To witness its most beautiful reflections, especially as it emerges from or submerges into the lake, visiting in the early morning during this period is highly recommended for optimal viewing.

3. Why does the Taushubetsu River Bridge get submerged underwater annually?

The Taushubetsu River Bridge is part of the old JNR Shihoro Line, which was submerged when Lake Nukabira was created for hydroelectric power. As a result, the bridge's visibility is entirely dependent on the fluctuating water levels of Lake Nukabira, causing it to appear only during the dry season when water levels are low, and submerge again at other times.

4. What are the recommended methods for accessing and viewing the Taushubetsu River Bridge?

Accessing the Taushubetsu River Bridge is primarily done through guided tours. These tours provide transport from central locations like Sapporo and navigate the restricted forest roads. This method ensures visitors can safely reach designated viewing spots, often in the early morning for the best photographic opportunities of the 'Phantom Bridge'.

5. Are there any special access requirements or fees for visiting the Taushubetsu River Bridge?

Individual access to the Taushubetsu River Bridge is generally restricted due to its location within a national forest and the need for specific permissions. While there are no explicit 'key fees' for direct public access, participation in a guided tour typically covers all necessary permits and logistical arrangements, simplifying the visiting process for travelers.

6. Where are the primary meeting points for tours visiting the Taushubetsu River Bridge?

Tours to the Taushubetsu River Bridge, such as the 2-day trip, typically depart from major transport hubs. For this specific product, the tour originates from Sapporo, offering convenient pick-up points within the city. Booking through KKday ensures you receive clear, detailed information on exact meeting locations and timings, making your travel planning seamless and stress-free.

7. What are the significant features and historical importance of the Fifth Ottofuke River Bridge?

The Fifth Ottofuke River Bridge is a prominent concrete arch bridge that was once part of the old JNR Shihoro Line. It is recognized for its historical and architectural value, having been designated as a Hokkaido Heritage site and registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.

8. What unique attractions can be experienced at Lake Shikaribetsu, known as the 'Lake of the Sky'?

Lake Shikaribetsu is known as a hidden gem, often referred to as the 'Lake of the Sky' due to its pristine, elevated location. A unique attraction at this secret lake is the mysterious railway tracks that seemingly disappear into its waters, offering a captivating and unusual sight for visitors to admire.
