Bonseki is a traditional Japanese culture that ranks alongside the tea ceremony and flower arrangement, and is a "summoned landscape" art in which the grandeur of mountains and oceans is condensed and depicted on a tray. Scenes and landscapes described in waka poetry are drawn with stones and white sand using feathers or small brooms on a jet-black lacquered tray.
The white sand is so delicate that it is classified into nine different grades of fineness, and sitting in front of the tray and clearing one's mind is just like Zen training.
