Juhyou, often called "ice trees" or "snow monsters," are a natural winter phenomenon where conifer trees, primarily fir trees, become completely covered in ice and snow. This occurs when supercooled water droplets from strong winds and fog freeze onto the trees' branches and needles, forming unique and intricate ice sculptures. Mount Gozaisho is known for these distinctive formations, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland.
The 'Juhyou' on Mount Gozaisho forms under specific meteorological conditions. When cold air masses bring supercooled water droplets, often from sea fog, high up the mountain, these droplets freeze instantly upon contact with trees, particularly coniferous varieties. Strong winds then cause these ice crystals to accumulate and grow, creating distinctive layered shapes around the branches and needles, giving them their characteristic "ice monster" appearance.
Juhyou are formed by supercooled water droplets freezing on contact, creating layers of ice. While branches are encased, the phenomenon is seasonal. Trees in their natural environment are adapted to these winter conditions, and the ice layers generally do not kill the trees, but rather protect them from strong winds. They shed the ice as temperatures rise, resuming normal growth for the warmer seasons.
The 'Juhyou' on Mount Gozaisho are a natural, transient phenomenon, and no specific human measures are taken to "preserve" individual ice trees. Their formation depends entirely on specific natural weather conditions like temperature, wind, and moisture. Instead, conservation efforts focus on maintaining the overall natural environment of Mount Gozaisho, ensuring the health of the forests and the ecosystem that allows this unique winter spectacle to occur year after year.
For the tour from Osaka, a comfortable coach bus is primarily used for transportation to and from Mount Gozaisho and Nabana no Sato. Upon arrival at Mount Gozaisho, a scenic ropeway is utilized to ascend to the higher elevations where the 'Juhyou' ice trees are best viewed. This combination ensures a convenient and enjoyable journey, allowing participants to relax and take in the changing landscapes.
Nabana no Sato offers one of Japan's most spectacular winter illumination displays, featuring vast light tunnels, creatively themed areas with millions of LED lights, and dynamic light shows. Inside, the Begonia Garden provides a lush, tropical oasis with vibrant flowers and plants year-round, offering a beautiful contrast to the winter theme outside. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls through illuminated landscapes and explore the diverse floral displays.
Beyond marveling at the 'Juhyou' ice trees, Mount Gozaisho offers a stunning winter wonderland experience. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding snowy mountains and valleys from the observation decks at the ropeway summit station. There are also opportunities for light snow play or photography amidst the pristine winter landscape. The ropeway ride itself provides breathtaking aerial vistas during the ascent and descent, making it an experience in itself.
