What are the best photo spots in Ginzan Onsen?
Ginzan Onsen itself is an excellent spot for photography. The most classic photo opportunity is in the center of the hot spring street, with wooden inns in the Taisho Roman style, such as Notoya, as the backdrop, complemented by the Ginzan River and the red bridge. It's particularly picturesque in winter with snow and at night when the gas lamps are lit, feeling like you're in a movie scene. From the Shirogane Bridge, you can capture a panoramic view of the hot spring street. The narrow alleys along the street and the unique signs of each inn are also perfect for retro-style photos. Don't forget to take a special picture at the retro Ginzan Onsen bus station.
What makes Ginzan Onsen unique compared to other Tohoku hot springs (e.g., Zao Onsen)?
Ginzan Onsen stands out with its unique Taisho Roman atmosphere. The hot spring street is lined with numerous three- and four-story wooden inns, preserving the architectural style from the early Showa to the Taisho periods. There are no modern large hotels here; instead, you'll find a rustic and elegant hot spring town landscape. Especially at night when the gas lamps are lit, it creates a nostalgic and serene ambiance, contrasting with Zao Onsen, which is known for its dynamic experiences like skiing and the wonders of frost-covered trees. Ginzan Onsen's sulfurous hot spring water also has therapeutic effects, allowing you to enjoy relaxation of body and mind in the ancient streets.
