Shuzenji Onsen offers a serene traditional Japanese experience. Key attractions include the historic Shuzenji Temple, a significant Buddhist site, and the picturesque Bamboo Forest Path, ideal for a peaceful stroll. Visitors can also enjoy the Tokko-no-Yu, a free open-air footbath on the Katsura River, and explore the charming hot spring town with its traditional ryokan and quaint shops. The area provides a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and appreciating natural beauty.
Shuzenji Onsen is renowned for its historic hot springs, often referred to as 'Izu's Little Kyoto.' The onsen water is typically clear and soothing, known for its relaxing properties. Visitors can experience traditional public baths (sotoyu) or enjoy private onsen facilities often available at ryokan. The atmosphere emphasizes tranquility and traditional Japanese aesthetics, offering a truly authentic hot spring bathing experience amidst scenic surroundings.
When visiting Shuzenji Onsen, it's customary to thoroughly wash your body at the shower area before entering the communal baths. Generally, most onsen are gender-segregated and require bathing nude; swimwear is typically not permitted. Long hair should be tied up, and towels should not be brought into the bathwater. Maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone in the onsen.
Historically, many Japanese onsen, including some in Shuzenji, have had strict policies regarding visible tattoos, often prohibiting entry. However, policies are gradually becoming more lenient. Some establishments may allow entry if tattoos are small and can be covered with a bandage. For guests with visible tattoos, considering private onsen rooms available at certain ryokan is a good alternative to enjoy the hot spring experience. It's always advisable to check with specific facilities beforehand.
For a structured day tour covering Shuzenji Onsen, Odawara Fishing Port, and Atami Ginza, transportation is typically arranged via a dedicated tour bus. This offers convenient and comfortable travel directly between each attraction, eliminating the need to navigate public transportation or worry about driving and parking on your own. It allows participants to relax and fully enjoy the scenic journey across the Izu Peninsula without logistical concerns.
At Odawara Fishing Port, visitors can immerse themselves in a vibrant local atmosphere centered around fresh seafood. You can explore the bustling fish market, observe the daily catch, and choose from numerous local restaurants offering incredibly fresh seafood dishes, including sashimi and various grilled options. It's an excellent opportunity to savor authentic Japanese marine cuisine and enjoy the lively port scenery right by the sea.
Atami Ginza shopping district offers a lively and traditional Japanese street atmosphere. Visitors can browse a variety of shops selling local souvenirs, regional delicacies, and unique handcrafted items. It's an ideal spot to find gifts, sample local snacks like senbei (rice crackers) or onsen manju (steamed buns), and simply soak in the vibrant energy of a classic Japanese shopping street, often featuring retro charm and historical architecture.
The best time to experience the vibrant autumn leaves around Shuzenji Onsen and throughout the Izu Peninsula is typically from late November to early December. During this period, the foliage transforms into stunning shades of red, orange, and gold, creating picturesque landscapes, especially along the Katsura River and around the temple grounds in Shuzenji. This late autumn window offers prime viewing opportunities for spectacular scenery.
