— Attraction Introduction —
- Smangus
Located at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters in the mountains behind Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County, Taiwan, this is an Atayal tribe village belonging to Yufeng Village, Jianshi Township. All residents are Atayal indigenous people. Due to its remote location in the mountains, inconvenient transportation, and long-term lack of electricity, it was once known as the "Dark Tribe" and is considered the most remote indigenous tribe in Taiwan. Later, the discovery of a group of sacred trees led to tourism development, and it has now become an important tourist destination.
Smangus Cherry Blossom Season
The village has about 2,000 cherry trees, including Taiwan cherry and Showa cherry trees, which are planted throughout the village. Dense cherry groves can be seen at the village gate, 300 meters from the Canaan parking lot trailhead, and 2.5 kilometers along the Giant Tree Trail. The cherry blossom season is from mid-February to early March each year.
- Tribal Viewpoint/Hunter's Walkway
Located at the highest point of Smangus, it offers a panoramic view of the entire Smangus tribe, a must-see when visiting Smangus. There are two routes to reach it: one is from the road to the left front of the visitor center, a gentle path less than 400 meters one way; the other is from the "Hunter's Trail," a steep ascent of just over 200 meters, where you can also experience a hunter's trail.
- YAYA Giant Tree (YaYa Qparung)
Smangus is renowned throughout Taiwan for its giant Taiwan red cypress forest. In this forest, you can see the giant tree known as "Grandpa," approximately 2500 years old, with a circumference of 20.5 meters and a height of about 35 meters. Its most distinctive feature is its "human-shaped" form, resembling a gentle mother embracing her children who come to visit, waiting for you to hear the whispers of the forest. Legend has it that when the Japanese came, the people of Smangus sought refuge here, hence the name "Yaya," meaning mother, in gratitude for its sheltering of their community.
- Giant Tree Trail
The one-way trip is about 5.2 kilometers, and the round trip is 10.4 kilometers, which takes about 3.5 to 4.5 hours. There are bamboo forests, maple forests and cherry blossom forests along the way, and the scenery is quite beautiful. There are several simple toilets and rest areas along the trail. The trail has a gentle slope and the surface is flat and easy to walk on. However, the ground is sometimes muddy, so it is recommended to wear non-slip shoes or rain boots.
- Slif Falls
The Slimhu Falls Trail is a newly developed trail by the Smakus people. During the rainy summer months, visitors can admire the magnificent waterfalls, while in autumn, the trail offers stunning views of the fall foliage. The round trip takes approximately 1.5 hours.
Koraw Eco Park
Koraw Eco-Park is an eco-trail located behind the Smangus tribe. In the Atayal language, it means "fertile land for the tribe to cultivate, and at sunset they return to the tribe, their bodies always covered in dark black soil." It represents the beauty of the land and symbolizes the promise of bountiful harvests year after year. The park is mainly planted with Lauraceae and Fagaceae plants, and when a gentle breeze blows, it feels like being in a fairyland.
- Tribal Classroom
Promoting the creation of tribal classrooms that combine traditional and modern perspectives since 2000, the classrooms aim to educate and nurture the community. The classrooms feature stacked wooden walls, and from inside the classroom, one can look up and see eagles flying through the skylight.
Canaan Cafe & Food House
The coffee and food court is situated on a high plateau in the village, in front of the New Canaan wooden houses. It is a meticulously designed large wooden building. The food court offers a variety of drinks and meals, and has a terrace area with beautiful mountain views. An arts and crafts shop is located next door, where you can choose from creative works such as tribal handicrafts and souvenir albums.
