Established in 1983, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) is Taiwan's first public art museum. It is dedicated to the preservation, research, development, and promotion of modern and contemporary art in Taiwan. Beyond documenting the past century of Taiwanese art history, the museum actively engages with ongoing developments in contemporary art. With a global perspective and a focus on regional context, TFAM nurtures artistic talent and promotes art education to foster a vibrant art ecosystem. Located in the Yuanshan area by the Keelung River, the museum was designed by architect Kao Shi-pan. The building features a minimalist, grey-and-white modernist style that incorporates the spirit of traditional Chinese courtyards. Using a cantilevered gallery design, the architect transformed the elements of traditional dougong brackets into a 'well' (井) shaped main structure, symbolizing the museum as a fountainhead of culture. The bright and spacious lobby connects to three floors above ground and one basement level, with glass curtain walls providing natural light.
