The tour started at 7:20 AM with a hotel pick-up in the city, followed by check-in at 7:40 AM. A guide spent twenty minutes explaining the different types of whales and dolphins. The boat departed at 8:00 AM. The weather was excellent, with calm seas; the boat rose and fell with the waves but didn't rock excessively. The boatman explained the key viewing points while keeping a close eye on the sea. If whales or dolphins were spotted, he would remind everyone to take out their cameras before slowly approaching. There were about five or six such sightings throughout the trip, with two or three instances of whales or dolphins swimming around the boat or leaping out of the water. The rest of the time was spent on the boat enjoying the sea views, admiring Hualien Harbor and the open ocean, as well as the scenery of the Central Mountain Range, while anticipating the peak whale and dolphin appearances. The tour ended after about two and a half hours, returning to port at 11:00 AM, followed by a shuttle back to the hotel. The entire tour was very well-organized, with no unnecessary waiting, making it a fantastic travel experience.
Venus Whale Watching is professional and attentive. The boat is clean and tidy, and the person in charge searches for dolphins and whales, providing detailed explanations. I was very lucky to encounter a pilot whale this time. I highly recommend it!
Taking the bus would have been cheaper, but since Taiwan was also experiencing a three-day weekend and expected to be crowded, we opted for convenience and made a reservation. Because my travel companion was Taiwanese, communication with the driver was no problem. At Sun Moon Lake, the driver provided information on sightseeing boat tickets, recommended routes, and even suggested souvenir shops where we could buy items at a slightly cheaper price. The driver drove safely and even checked on us when we needed to use the restroom, allowing us to enjoy the trip with peace of mind.
