We received a detailed itinerary the day before the trip (including introductions to attractions and estimated time spent). Our guide, Xiao Cui, was friendly and attentive, and even helped us take photos. We visited Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, ate plum-shaped rice cakes, and bought amulets. The Beppu Ropeway was under maintenance and we were heading to Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell), which was a nice and unique attraction, but the weather was too hot. Those who like Miyazaki Hayao or cute trinkets will enjoy Yunotsubo Street, which also has Snoopy and Miffy shops with exquisite and adorable gift boxes perfect for presents. There were long queues for Kamameshiko (grilled rice cake), so we skipped it and saved our stomachs for other snacks. Must-try items included Milch pudding, Hanakori Kikuya pudding dorayaki, Kichigo fried chicken, matcha shaved ice, soy sauce dumplings, etc. B-speak was sold out without a reservation; the staff were a bit arrogant and didn't look at us when they spoke. Finally, I took the Yufuin no Mori train at around 5 PM. I arrived at the station early, but many shops nearby close at 4 or 4:30 PM, so I couldn't get onto the platform early and had to queue outside. Therefore, I couldn't take a picture of the train entering the station. While queuing to board, I could take a picture of the train's engine, but I didn't have a chance to soak in the foot bath on the platform. I was too tired on the return trip and just wanted to rest. The seats at the Yufuin no Mori are quite narrow and uncomfortable, especially for four people trying to turn their seats around to face each other; the space became even narrower, and I couldn't stretch my legs. The interior has a wooden design and a retro style. There are souvenirs and sweets available for purchase. Train bento boxes need to be ordered online in advance. The train departs from Yufuin at 5:17 PM and arrives in Hakata at 7:27 PM. Personally, I think it's best to only ride a retro train if you really like vintage trains. If you want a comfortable ride back to Hakata, I recommend taking a bus. Overall, it was a great trip. For attractions that are inconvenient to reach on your own, a day tour is the most convenient option when traveling with children and elders!
I recommend taking the boat in the morning, as the temperature isn't too hot yet and there's warm sunshine. The environment is peaceful, and the boatman's service is excellent. After disembarking, stroll around the area before having steamed eel rice. Take the 12 pm shuttle bus back to Yanagawa Station and head to Dazaifu. There are many snacks in Omotesando; you can try them. Nearby are Ichiran Ramen and Danbu Ramen.
Compared to airplanes, although the flight takes longer, you can move around freely, lie down to rest, and even have a large public bath. Immigration is quick, and there are even people queuing with their suitcases – a very interesting first-time experience.
