What is Toi Gold Mine?
Located in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Toi Gold Mine is the largest gold mine on Honshu. Mining began in the 1370s during the Ashikaga period and reached its peak during the Edo period. With an estimated production of 40 tons of gold and 400 tons of silver, it was the second largest in Japan, following only the Sado Gold Mine. Today, Toi Gold Mine is open as a tourist facility. Inside the tunnel, animatronic figures recreate the mining scenes of the Edo period, allowing visitors to feel as if they have traveled back in time to experience the historical atmosphere of Izu's golden land.
What can you do at Toi Gold Mine?
Take a tour of the mine tunnel to see the recreated mining scenes up close. The Gold Museum displays gold ore, a 1/8 scale model of a Sengoku ship, and various gold coins like Oban and Koban. The Kaiun Golden Garden and the Golden Torii are popular photo spots, while the Mountain Shrine, dedicated to Oyamatsumi-no-Mikoto, attracts visitors praying for wealth and good luck.
