Fengyi Academy was first built in the 19th year of the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty (1814) and is the oldest and largest academy currently preserved in Taiwan. In the past, it primarily served as a local educational institution, cultivating Confucian talents and holding imperial examinations. After restoration, it not only preserves its historical appearance but also features diverse exhibitions on academy operations, the imperial examination system, and the history of Fongshan, allowing visitors to understand its rich history and cultural functions.
Getting to Fengyi Academy by public transportation is very convenient. You can take the Kaohsiung MRT Orange Line to Fongshan Station (O12) and walk west along Guangyuan Road for about 10 to 15 minutes after exiting from Exit 2. Alternatively, you can take the Taiwan Railways to Fongshan Station, and after exiting, walk west along Guangyuan Road for about 10 to 15 minutes. Additionally, several bus routes pass near the academy.
The architectural style of Fengyi Academy blends traditional Minnan characteristics with academy features, presenting a layout of three main halls with two flanking corridors, preserving key structures like the 'front gate,' 'lecture hall,' and 'hallway.' One of its most attractive features is the 33 Q-version character sculptures scattered throughout the grounds, vividly recreating scenes of Qing Dynasty students studying, taking exams, and their daily lives, making it a unique photo opportunity.
Fengyi Academy offers a variety of cultural experiences. Among the most popular is the Qing Dynasty official attire experience, allowing visitors to wear traditional robes and take photos within the ancient academy, enjoying a sense of time travel. The academy also frequently hosts traditional arts performances or lectures, providing visitors with a deep understanding of the educational models and academic atmosphere of that era through its rich activities.
After exiting Taiwan Railways Fongshan Station, please walk west along Guangyuan Road for about 10 to 15 minutes, and you will reach Fengyi Academy. If you are taking the Kaohsiung MRT Orange Line, please alight at Fongshan Station (O12). It is recommended to exit from Exit 2 and then walk west along Guangyuan Road for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. There are clear signs guiding your way.
During the Qing Dynasty, Fengyi Academy was responsible for nurturing local scholars. Its education system emphasized the study of Confucian classics and included rigorous preparatory courses for the imperial examinations. In addition to lecture halls for teaching, the academy also provided dormitories for students to live and study. This comprehensive and systematic educational model aimed to help students pass the imperial examinations and pursue official careers.
In addition to the charming historical architecture of the academy itself, the biggest photo highlight at Fengyi Academy is the lifelike Q-version character sculptures throughout the grounds. These figures vividly depict scenes of Qing Dynasty students in class, taking exams, and engaging in daily activities, such as a 'dozing student' or a 'student caught cheating,' offering many fun and contextualized interactive photo opportunities.
