Why is Lieyu called Lieyu?
Legend has it that Lieyu Island and Kinmen were originally connected. In the late Song Dynasty, Emperor Bing, fleeing from Yuan soldiers, was in danger at sea near Kinmen. A mountain collapsed and the earth split, separating Lieyu from Kinmen and giving Emperor Bing a chance to survive. Thus, the island was bestowed the name 'Lieyu'.
